We all know that nurses are often the face of the patient experience. They provide everything from medication to comfort for their patients, and are the most consistent presence during a patient’s stay. So how can health IT help support these important members of the care team?
Recently, we visited Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge, LA, to speak first hand to the nurses there, and learn more about how technology supports the work they do and helps improve patient care.
Woman’s Hospital is one of the largest women’s specialty hospitals in the United States. With the largest delivery facility in Louisiana, it’s no surprise that they need innovative technology to support their team. And as the first area hospital to achieve Nursing Magnet® status and one of Modern Healthcare Magazine’s Top Places to Work in Healthcare for the past eleven years, it’s clear that they know how to select the best tools for their staff and provide excellent patient care.
In 2019, Tanya Johnson, BSN, RN and the nursing informatics manager at Woman’s Hospital explained how point of care technology helps provide a calm, quiet environment for new mothers and their babies in labor and delivery. During our visit, we stopped by a nurse’s station to hear from four other nurses on the team about how Expanse Point of Care makes their job easier.
We all know that nurses have a difficult job. With a device that fits in their pocket, they are able to be supported by technology, rather than slowed down by it. “It’s so small that you don’t have to navigate the computer on wheels around obstacles in the room,” explained Michelle Rome, BSN, RNC - MNN. “You can just go straight up to the patient, there’s no computer screen blocking you and the patient; it’s more personable that way.”
And it’s not just the nurse/patient relationship that’s improved by mobility; it also improves communication between doctors and nurses. “If a physician is at the nurse’s station, and I’m in a patient’s room, I can see what’s going on at that point in time,” shared Shan Mott, BSN, RN.
