4 stories that showcase the power of nurses

Written by Emily Pacheco-Valente, BSN, RN, MEDITECH | May 8, 2025

As the backbone of patient care, nurses need their voices heard when it comes to decision-making. This year, the theme of ANA’s annual Nurses Week is The Power of Nurses. Nurses are one of the largest parts of the care team as far as staffing numbers, they spend the most time with patients, and they are the ones who often facilitate communication with families, caregivers, and the broader care team. This means they are a powerful part of not just individual organizations, but the healthcare industry as a whole. Read on to hear from a number of organizations where nurses are giving voice to the needs of their patients and their care teams.

Giving nurses a voice in EHR launch at Boone Health

When they implemented their EHR, the team at Boone Health developed a very deliberate strategy to make sure they involved nurses throughout the process. In order to streamline clinical workflows and nursing documentation, they developed a Nursing Optimization group, including a member of staff from every specialty to ensure equal representation across the board and to make sure the challenges nurses face are effectively communicated. What nurses want from their leadership

We often hear about what keeps C-levels up at night or the issues causing physician burnout - but what are the biggest challenges nurses face? The KLAS Arch Collaborative created an 18-month study on burnout with a focus on EHR impact. Nurses identified a number of factors that are contributing to burnout, including staff shortages, too many bureaucratic tasks, and a lack of shared values with leadership to name a few. In this blog, we asked MEDITECH customers how leaders have listened to their nurses and how they have directly addressed burnout issues at their organization.

Saving nurses time at the bedside

How is technology helping reduce nurse burnout rather than contributing to it? In this video you’ll hear from Holly Davis, MBA, BSA, RN, the CNO at Bingham Healthcare as she explains how the EHR is saving nurses hours a day whether it’s in the medication administration process, or during discharge. The team at Bingham has taken a discharge time that used to be 20-30 minutes and shaved it down to five minutes. See how technology is saving nurses time, improving patient care, and helping support nurse satisfaction.

Phoebe Putney's MEDITECH Expanse Go-Live & Efforts to Address the Nursing Shortage

At last year’s MEDITECH LIVE event, leadership from Phoebe Putney Health System sat down with John Lynn from Healthcare IT Today to talk about the benefits their move to MEDITECH Expanse has had on their nurses. Phoebe Putney has seen the nurse experience improved by solutions such as Expanse’s streamlined discharge processes and the rollout of Expanse Point of Care at the bedside. They’ve also embraced a creative nursing education program strategy that helps them develop a pathway for staffing and retain their team. Watch the full video to hear more about the strategies that they have taken to address nurse shortages and retain quality staff with technologies such as virtual nursing.
