Agility, Innovation, and Heart: How Phoebe Sumter Is Redefining Nursing Leadership
At Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Georgia, Dr. Kelsey Reed, DNP, has been innovating how nurses care for patients and influence positive organizational change in her dual role as CNO and COO. Here, in conversation with MEDITECH’s Chief Marketing and Nursing Executive Cathy Turner, RN, Dr. Reed discusses how establishing a shared decision-making culture has helped Phoebe Sumter drive improvements across a number of metrics, such as stroke outcomes, sepsis outcomes, patient safety, and emergency room length of stay.
Dr. Reed also talks about how Phoebe Sumter’s small size means they can be nimble enough to be bold when it comes to piloting new technologies and methods. They’ve had major success in investing in virtual nursing to focus on things like documentation, training, and education — not to pull resources away from bedside nurses, but to ballast and support the essential work they do. One positive outcome of increased engagement from nursing staff has been an exciting community education outreach initiative that is entirely staff-led.
Prepare for What’s Next in Healthcare: Policy, Funding, Technology, and More
In a conversation with MEDITECH’s Director of Marketing, Rachel Wilkes, Tom Leary, Senior Vice President & Head of Government Relations for HIMSS, provides insightful context and analysis of how healthcare organizations should be thinking about the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The act comes with cuts to Medicaid that create a great deal of uncertainty in the present moment for everyone in the industry.
Leary reminds healthcare organizations that now is the time to put energy into ensuring technologies are being thoughtfully leveraged to boost efficiency, and he discusses how organizations have to contend with a landscape of both uncertainty and opportunity in other important ways. Federal attempts to enforce rules around information blocking may create greater possibilities for interoperability across EHRs. At the same time, the absence of a national strategy around AI means that states are proposing their own legislation, creating the potential for a difficult, fragmented landscape for new technologies.
How Hancock Health is Transforming Patient Engagement with MEDITECH Expanse Patient Connect and MyHealth
Indiana-based Hancock Health has been an early adopter of MEDITECH’s real-time, automated communication solution. Hancock’s Director of Information Services, Angela Soliday, discusses some of the exciting ways they are using that technology with Rachel Wilkes.
Perhaps most excitingly, Soliday notes that Hancock Health is seeing real, tangible gains in how AI-driven, bi-directional texting is improving their ability to get patients scheduled for preventative interventions while simultaneously reducing no-show rates. The conversation also touches on key updates to Expanse Patient Connect and MyHealth, including a current stay dashboard to get important patient information out to loved ones, a staff AI co-pilot to increase the efficiency of efforts to send messages out to patients in a way that meets them where they are, and much more.
