Over the past few years, MEDITECH has been developing and launching AI solutions that are delivering real world results for our customers, and we recently hosted a Thought Leader Webinar to share some key insights and lessons we’ve learned along the way.
MEDITECH’s philosophy with AI solutions can be described with the acronym “FIT for USE,” which outlines how Feedback, Integration, and Training support User acceptance, Safety, and Effectiveness.
FIT for USE:
Feedback: Continuous assessment and improvement of AI systems
Integration: Evaluation of the cross-departmental impact of AI solutions
Training: Standardized guidelines and ongoing education for clinicians and patients
User acceptance: Widespread adoption of AI solutions
Safety: Confidence in AI and its handling of data
Effectiveness: Better results for healthcare staff and patients
We believe that any AI initiative should contribute to the goal of providing safe, efficient, and impactful care. For MEDITECH, our mission has always been to develop and deliver technology that enables this kind of care, and that absolutely includes AI.
Key elements of successful AI integration
In every development project, we focus on clearly identifying a customer’s goals and ensuring that our efforts are aligned to meet them. It's not just about implementing the latest technology for the sake of it; it's about integrating AI to address specific challenges that improve the end user and patient experience and support efficiency across an organization. Our experience has illustrated that successful AI deployment in healthcare requires careful planning, meaningful partnerships, clear expectations, and a focus on getting buy-in from everyone who will use the new solution.
When discussing AI use cases, we find it helpful to map them on a spectrum based on the degree of change management and risk involved. Simple tasks like retrieving data are straightforward, while more advanced applications like machine learning and generative AI require more robust change management. This includes adapting workflows, ensuring accountability, and establishing documentation standards.
We know that meaningful partnerships are crucial. Our work with pilot customers and technology vendors has given us invaluable real-world insights, and resulted in AI solutions that are explainable, efficient, and effective. Our in-depth knowledge of the healthcare industry enables us to tailor technology advancements to address the specific needs and feedback of healthcare organizations. We understand that cost is a significant concern for many organizations. Our underlying infrastructure allows us to create an open ecosystem for innovation, giving organizations the freedom to choose the solutions that best meet their needs.
Setting clear expectations is the third major element of a successful AI implementation. AI development is an ongoing process, not a one-time solution. There's still ambiguity around AI terms and concepts in healthcare, so organizations need to have candid discussions to see beyond the hype, establish specific goals, and work with their vendor to track model performance and user satisfaction.
We’re working with customers and partners to thoughtfully address each of these key elements, and deliver on the promises offered by AI for improving operational efficiency, giving providers new insights into patient and community health needs, and putting the focus back on improving patient health.
