The unspoken courage of modern nursing

As the unprecedented Years of the Nurse draw to a close, I cannot let this moment pass without once again recognizing our incredible nursing community. We’re nearly two years into a pandemic that no one expected or asked for, and my gratitude for this community has only grown. To imagine then what we’ve now faced, and are facing, would have been impossible. My appreciation for you all is without measure.

This time has been a challenge, to say the least. To all you tired, overburdened caregivers: We see you. To every informaticist rewriting the playbook on the fly, we value your mental agility. To each nurse leader that supported your staff through these times as well as returned to the front lines for the first time in years, we are inspired by your dedication to doing good above all. This community, amid real trauma, rose to the challenge.

This time showed us that you don’t have to be in traditional “nurse leadership” to be a nurse leader, as we saw heroism throughout the ranks of healthcare. Every job has purpose and value to what we are all trying to do. We know there are far more parts of this career that aren’t talked about enough. Thank you for every impossible decision and every unnoticed moment of humanity.

At MEDITECH, we try to be a partner who can keep pushing others forward, but you have truly outshone yourselves when the world needed it. You've stepped up, and we’ve seen it. We are inspired by it. The leadership, ingenuity, and sacrifice you've shown will be with us all, long after the pandemic.

These years have fundamentally altered how nursing is defined, and you have met each challenge in accordance with your pledge. Your voices are beginning to capture the world's attention, and things will never be the same. We will continue to address and amplify your messages on burnout and concerns amid historic shortages.

As we close the Years of the Nurse and start anew in ‘22, I believe both sides of this partnership are pointed squarely in the right direction — forward. To serve as a bookend, I wanted to share some recent nursing pieces that speak in different ways to the challenges and successes we’ve seen together over 2020 and 2021. I believe this is evidence of momentum that only a partnership can bring.
