MEDITECH showcases interoperable, data-driven decision-making at ViVE

At MEDITECH, we believe it’s time for healthcare interoperability to move beyond data sharing. The healthcare system today produces more data than humans can possibly use — particularly clinicians, who are already struggling with data overload. What’s lacking is insights; the ability to make data meaningful and actionable.

At ViVE 2025, we demonstrated our vision for moving beyond the current state of data sharing — which primarily involves transmitting and receiving static documents and data — toward next-level, FHIR-based data sharing. Traverse Exchange, our new national data exchange network, was designed to do just that. We showed how a FHIR-first approach can enable real-time access to data from a wide variety of sources outside of our EHR. More importantly, we showed how we can organize and curate that data at the point of care so clinicians can actually use it

By doing so, we’re proving that healthcare organizations no longer need to use the same EHR to have access to the data vital to making informed care decisions. They can maintain their independence and autonomy with respect to larger health systems — because success will no longer depend upon who has the data, but who makes it meaningful and usable. In other words, who turns data into insights.

Our approach to interoperability is central to our intelligent EHR strategy, but it’s just one of several components. Beyond Traverse Exchange, we showcased other core elements of our intelligent EHR, including our cloud solutions, precision medicine technology, mobility tools, and (of course) intelligent use of AI. But we didn’t just talk about these things. We had several customers show them, and share their results.

The power of automation with AI

Jonathan Hatfield, CEO at Klickitat Valley Health, explained how his organization achieved a 400% ROI and recovered over $1 million/year  leveraging AI to automate multiple processes — demonstrating that AI can be used to do more than streamline clinical documentation processes and provider workflows to have wider-reaching organizational impacts. He even described how his staff, over the course of the projects, overcame their fears around working with AI and now participate in the process of proposing new automation use cases.

Selecting the right ambient listening technology

Ozarks Healthcare CMIO and Hospitalist Priscilla Frase, MD participated in a panel discussion focused on choosing the right ambient technology for your organization. Dr. Frase explained the importance of rigorously testing multiple solutions and assessing how each enhances patient care and staff efficiency. She offered guidance on effective methods for evaluating, comparing, and implementing ambient solutions.

Senior Vice President and Transformation Officer Michael Schlosser, MD from HCA Healthcare joined Dr. Frase on the panel. His deep expertise guiding the development, implementation, and optimization of new technologies and processes — including AI systems and ambient technologies — was well received. He shared experiences directing his organization’s AI and machine learning teams and leading their Responsible AI program.

Achieving the highest standards of safety and innovation

Nayan Patel, CIO at Upson Regional Medical Center, joined a panel session titled “Remember Those Walls We Built? Well, Diagnostics Can Tumble Them Down.” Patel discussed the delicate balance between safety, cybersecurity, and profitability — and the challenges harmonizing these goals poses for health systems and medical device manufacturers. He shared personal experiences as a leader balancing these trade-offs to develop secure, effective, and cost-efficient diagnostic tools that enable enhanced care delivery and drive successful business operations.

MEDITECH's Key Areas of Focus at ViVE:

These sessions and the many conversations we had with our customers at the event underscored the profound impact our intelligent EHR is having on improving outcomes and optimizing operations. We’re proud of the success Expanse users are having and are excited to be at the forefront of some of the most innovative solutions featured at ViVE.

We look forward to continuing these conversations at our next big event — HIMSS25. I hope to see you there.

Mike Cordeiro is a Senior Director of Interoperability Market and Product Strategy at MEDITECH. He is focused on furthering the adoption of Interoperability products and services to improve patient and caregiver access to important health information. One of Mike’s key roles has been to architect solutions that tighten integration between external practice EMRs and the MEDITECH EHR, which allows providers easy and instantaneous access to patient health data on multiple platforms. This effort was the building block for the solution that became MEDITECH Traverse.
